139 km north east of Launceston, further on from Scottsdale, is the tiny town of Gladstone.This once bustling town was a former tin and gold mining district. Today mining has all but disappeared and only gemstone fossicking remains popular.
The Gladstone cemeteries are of particular interest as they contain the graves of Chinese miners. An historical, insightful journey into the lives of immigrant miners in Tasmania.
Gladstone has a general store, a hotel and a police station and is also the main entrance to Mount William National Park and Eddystone Point light House. Mount William National Park has abundant wildflowers in spring, forests, and beaches popular with surfers and anglers. It is rich with kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons, echidnas, wombats, possums, quolls and bird life. There are also panoramic mountain views and remains of ancient Aboriginal feasts.Photos
