North West Tasmania is a labyrinth of isolated beaches, wild coastlines, quaint towns and national parks. The gateway to this rugged region is Devonport, with an airport and a ferry terminal linking Tasmania to the mainland and beyond. This vibrant city is on the banks of the Mersey River and is the hub of Tasmania.
Burnie, Sandy Cape, King Island, Rebecca Beach as well as the Cradle Mountain National Park are unique spots to visit. Stormy waters, uninhabited bushland, wildlife, rugged rock faces, wilderness retreats, walking tracks, icy streams, ancient pines, glacial lakes, ghost towns and indigenous art are part of the itinerary in North West Tasmania.
A special place of interest worth visiting in the Northwest is The Tarkine. This is Australias largest area of unprotected temperate rainforest and was once home to the Tarkine people. It is bound by the spectacular Arthur River.
Also worth visiting are the Gunns Plains Caves, these are amazing limestone caves where stalactites and stalagmites abound, glow worms dazzle and platypus nest.Photos
