Close to the Leven River is Ulverstone which has a population of 10 000 people, making it the state's 2nd largest town behind Kingston. It is 15 minutes' drive west of Devonport on the Bass Highway and 19km east of the town Penguin.
In the early days the town was known as The Leven until it changed to Ulverstone which was derived from Ulverston in Lancashire, England.
Ulverstone is conveniently located to many natural attractions such as caves, creeks and even a canyon that takes ten hours to walk! It is also noted for several fine old homesteads and gardens, federation hotels and colonial architecture. There are excellent facilities and locations for water sports and fishing. The beaches on the east are accessible for this, as well as on the river and at the estuary to the west. Many parks along Ulverstone's coastline are a hub of activity in the summer months, with lifesaver patrols and even a waterslide.Photos
