North of Temma, set in amongst the unspoilt, isolated, rugged west coast of Tasmania, is Rebecca Beach. A little further inland is also Rebecca Lagoon. The beach, lagoon and surrounds are living testament to the Aboriginal and European history that forged the area.
In 1853 the barque Rebecca became wrecked on a reef off the wild coastline. Six people are thought to have perished while attempting to reach the shore, hence the derivation of the name Rebecca Beach and Rebecca lagoon. Local legend claims the sailing ship was laden with a valuable cargo of wine, beer and crockery. Today, pieces of worn crockery, believed to be from the barque are still being tossed ashore from the treacherous seas. Shards and remnants can sometimes be found during low tide after a storm, but patient beach fossickers usually go home with some kind of treasure.
Rebecca Lagoon also boasts a sizeable population of the threatened Large Golden Moth Orchid.
