Weather for Savage River

South west from Burnie, west from Launceston, in the wild and rugged country of northwestern Tasmania, Savage River is located near one of the most isolated coastlines on earth. Handy to it are the Longback Range and Mt Stewart, the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, the Tarkine and Corinna.

Deposits of iron ore were discovered in Savage River around 1870, but could not be extracted for transporting because of the inaccessibility of the region. It took almost 100 years until a solution was found. This huge open cut mine now sends the ore through an 85km long pipeline to Port Latta, where it is processed and exported, mainly to Japan.

Corinna, which is the closest town to Savage River takes twenty minutes by car and has a population of about 5. It is an old mining ghost town which once boasted a population in excess of 2500 people.
