Voted as one of Australia's top 10 towns by the popular Australian Traveller magazine, Strahan is a sleepy fishing village set on the banks of the magnificent Macquarie Harbour.
The town was considered isolated and left behind by much 20th century “progress”, but the result is a beautiful town with a sense of community, purity and clarity that many others lack.
The Visitors Centre boasts some fantastic, informative displays about the history of the town and the region. The story starts 35,000 years ago with the Aborigines, and proceeds through convict times, mining and forestry. The exhibit includes indoor waterfalls and rainforests, caves, and oral history.
Strahan has risen to become one of Tasmania’s tourism hotspots. Situated 300km west of Hobart, around 4hrs drive, the town features is home to the West Coast Wilderness Railway and a variety of restaurants and bistros.
Hells Gate was named by convicts. It captures the dangers of the narrow entrance as well as the idea that this was beyond civilisation. It was the entrance to one of the most isolated places on earth.
