Built in the 1930's to capture the Murray's waters, Lake Mulwala is now an integral part of the aquatic lifestyle for the 8000 residents. Lakeside picnics, birdwatching, fishing, sailboarding, waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, sailing, boating and guided paddleboat cruises are all part of the fun. The surrounding forests and reserves boast over 50 spots in which visitors and locals alike can camp.

Forged into the landscape is a strong Aboriginal presence. The towns themselves derive their names from the Aboriginal word "Yarra" meaning "water running over rocks" and "wonga" after the "Wonga pigeon". Mulwala means big lagoon or big back water. The 6 foot deep man made reservoir Boat Rock is also nostalgic of Aboriginal history. Shaped like a large rowing boat its purpose was to catch water from higher rocks and slopes. "Canoe Trees” dot the countryside, illustrating the traditional method of carving canoes from trees.
