Once the states most substantial inland river port, Echuca is known far and wide as the paddle steamer capital of Australia. One of Victorias oldest river towns, its a great base for waterskiing, swimming, cruising or taking a houseboat holiday.
From the Aboriginal word meaning "meeting of the water", Echuca has drawn visitors to the town since restoration of the old port area began in 1973.
Visitors can take a relaxing cruise aboard one of the authentic paddle steamers, and learn about pioneering days from the captain's commentary, or enjoy a leisurely self-guided stroll along the Echuca Wharf just as interesting.
The National Holden Museum is full of beautifully restored iconic Aussie cars. If you dont want to pay the entrance fee, then sit on a park bench and watch locals drive past in their un-restored examples (not quite the same though).
Far from just being about the past though, Echuca is also home to an excellent variety of modern shops and eateries. The river is a fantastic fishing spot in its own right, and a drive through Barmah State Forest is hugely rewarding.Photos
