Weather for Koondrook

Perched on the opposite side of the Murray River from its twin town Barham is Koondrook. New South Wales lays claim to Barham, while Koondrook is part of Victoria.

Koondrook is an attractive town framed within fertile flats and rich red sand hills. Not surprisingly timber, dairy and citrus fruit are the main staple industries. Undoubtedly Koondrook is most revered for being the home of Gunbower Island. Sandwiched between a creek and the main branch of the Murray River is a 50 km long stretch of sand, reputed to be Australia's largest inland island. The island of sand is swept by swamps, enormous river red gums and box forest. Kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and an array of bird species thrive on the island.

Further along, at low tide the remnants of an old punt and several wrecks can be seen. A sawmill, operates with guided tours. The local historical society has a display of local artifacts housed in an old schoolhouse. Next door to the schoolhouse, is the Baptist Church, built in 1889. Opposite to this is an old weighbridge, the tracks from the discontinued tramway are still visible behind it.
