The Twelve Apostles are an iconic natural attractions located just east of Port Campbell, along the Great Ocean Road.
The marine national park covers 7,500Ha and stretches approx 17km along the rugged coastline. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to view, as the light transforms the structures from dark and foreboding in shadow to sandy yellow under a full sun.
The extraordinary rock formations, featured in many a travellers holiday snaps, are the remnants from constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland that began 10-20 million years ago.
The limestone was created through the build up of skeletons of marine creatures on the sea floor, and as the sea retreated, the limestone was exposed. The ocean and winds gradually eroded softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. These caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed, stacks of rock up to 45m high were left isolated from the shore.
The wild and powerful Southern Ocean that sculpts the area's landscape also shrouds a remarkable seascape beneath the waves - a submarine labyrinth of towering canyons, caves, arches and walls. The Twelve Apostles Marine National Park is home to weedy sea dragons, little penguins, lobster, fur seals, abalone, sea urchins and a diverse selection of reef fish.
From the lookout, you can see a number of the twelve apostles, the others are located behind the rocky headlands that line the Victoria coastline. Originally the Twelve Apostles were named the "Sow and Piglets" - the sow was Muttonbird Island, the piglets being the smaller surrounding rocks.Photos
