Portarlington is located on a hillside at the tip of the Bellarine Peninsula overlooking Port Phillip Bay. It is a quiet residential town which turns rapidly into a popular resort town during holiday time due to its picturesque outlook and great camping ground.

The Wathaurong Aborigines originally inhabited the area, and evidence of their past can be seen along the foreshore by the Fairfax Street boat ramp, where Aboriginal shell middens remain firmly imbedded in the cliff face.

Fishing is also important to the seaside town of Portarlington. The area is well known for its mussel farming. You will always see a number of fishing vessels tied up at the pier and on weekends fresh mussels are sold. Visit in January and you will catch Portarlington's annual mussel festival, where the locals celebrate the abundance of shellfish in their off-shore mussel farms.

Less than 10 kilometers away from the other peninsula townships of Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Drysdale and Queenscliff, Portarlington's position on the Bellarine Peninsula makes it the perfect base for a holiday in this region.
