Glenrowan was a quiet little town tucked away between Benalla and Wangaratta in northeast Victoria. Quiet until the events of Saturday, 27 June 1880 shot its name full bore into Australian history and folklore.
On that day, Australia's legendary bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang made their final stand at Glenrowan. Having captured the railway station, the Kelly Gang rounded up over 60 hostages and holed up in the Glenrowan Inn. In the ensuing battle with police, three gang members were killed or committed suicide, probably from taking poison. Remarkably, Kelly escaped but was shot in the legs and arrested some hours later. He was tried, convicted of murder and hanged on November 11, 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol.
Gateway to the Legends, Wine and High Country region, the town is 'guarded' by a 6m-high statue of a Ned Kelly clad in homemade armour and helmet, rifle in hand.
