For sheer beauty, the King Valley is hard to beat. But then you get to taste the wines, and you'll realise what an exceptional package this region presents.
The King Valley wine region spans from the township of Wangaratta, following the King River up to the Great Dividing Range and back down towards the town of Mansfiled. There are tiny farmlets and villages in the valley floor and magnificent views from the ridges. The region experiences a wide climatic change from the mountain slopes to the valley floor. This ensures for a diverse range in the wine styles and grapes grown.
The wine production as such began in the 1970s, making this wine region one of the newest in Australia. Production took off some years later when Italian farmers converted to winemaking from tobacco growing. The tobacco industry did not survive and viticulture becoming the predominant industry.
Although this region is mainly devoted to vineyards, there are several cellar doors. For the wine traveller, there is lots of local produce to experience, including cheeses, mustards and the Brown Brothers Epicurean Centre. The region has a large range of accommodation on offer including many splendid bed and breakfasts. This wine region is not just pretty, it's wines are high-quality and it's close to the snowfields.
