Originally settled as a sheep station in 1837, Malmsbury soon developed as an area of land being granted to squatters by the government. Malmsbury was recognised as unique because of its rich agricultural lands in combination with gold bearing soils. The area soon developed as a service town providing for travellers heading for the goldfields of the north.

Malmsbury thrived and by the mid 1800's boasted 4 churches, 1 hospital, 2 schools, 2 banks, 17 hotels, 3 mills, 2 breweries, a racecourse, town hall, plenty of shops and a small number of gold mines. Bluestone was abundant in and around Malmsbury and was to quarried to build many significant buildings, including the National Trust-classified 'The Viaduct'. Malmsbury has maintained the historic streetscape, which remains very similar in appearance to the early years.

Attractions include 'The Viaduct' spanning across the Coliban River, the historic streetscape, the botanic gardens established in 1865 one of the earliest regional botanic gardens in Australia. The historic steam mill, Malmsbury Bakery and a variety of shops including many featuring antiques and crafts make for a interesting visit.
