Richmond, a culturally diverse area and a busy commercial centre, lies just 3km east of the Melbourne's CBD. This fascinating suburb, once know as Struggle Town, is one of the city's earliest settlements. A short cab trip or tram ride from town lands you in a vibrant village with distinct personalities, each offering something unique. Richmond was named after Richmond Hill, London. Melbourne's Richmond Hill, known also as Dockers Hill, is surmounted by four church spires.
The Richmond Football Club has fiercely loyal supporters. The 'eat 'em alive' club, known as the Tigers, has won 10 premierships since it joined the Victorian Football League (now known as the Australian Football League or the AFL) in 1908.
The Richmond Town Hall and surrounding areas of Swan Street have rentained significant elements of social history and material culture from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The revitalisation of shopping strips in Melbourne is reflected particularly in Bridge Road and Swan Street. Clothes-conscious young residents and bargain-conscious shoppers made Bridge Road the factory-seconds shopping capital of Australia, as well as a place to find big-name budget fashions and offerings from Australias finest young designers.
