Errol Street, North Melbourne, earned its stripes as a busy thoroughfare by being the off-ramp from Melbourne to the goldfields in the 1850s. At one point, the area had more pubs per capita in Australia — literally one on every corner — as punters gathered to celebrate or commiserate their efforts. North Melbourne has retained its fascinating architecture and Errol Street is still a living and functioning street — as opposed to a museum.
One of the best ways to experience the established cultural mix of the area is via the North and West Melbourne Multicultural Arts Festival - The Spring Fling! Errol Street explodes in colour, music, dance and fun.
