Located less than 25 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, Nillumbik Shire has a total area of 430 square kilometres. With the Yarra River as its southern boundary, the Shire extends 29 kilometres to the Kinglake National Park in the north.

It stretches approximately 20 kilometres from the Plenty River and Yan Yean Road in the west to Christmas Hills and the Yarra escarpment in the east. The population of 60,000 live in close-knit communities ranging from urban settings to remote and tranquil bush properties.
