Located just 7 kilometers north-west of Melbbourne's CBD, Moonee Ponds Ponds is home to one of Melbourne's largest horse-racing tracks, the Moonee Valley Racecourse. Here you will also find the tranquil gardens of Queens Park, which dates back to the 19th century.
During the gold rush years the park was a gathering place for travellers on their way to the goldfields as it had a freshwater lagoon. Burke and Wills are also said to have camped here before starting their fateful journey across Australia.
Puckle Street is the main shopping street, boasting a large range of shops and cafes catering to all tastes and interests. At its eastern end is Moonee Ponds Junction and at its western end is the Moonee Ponds train station. Nearby you will find the Clocktower Center, one the Essendon Town Hall, now a large theater.Moonee Ponds is the 'spiritual' home of Australia's famous comedian housewife, Dame Edna Everage,and other famous former residents include Tina Arena, who spent a part of her early life in Moonee Ponds, and former Melbourne Storm player Jake Webster.
