Williamstown is one of those blissful city locations that's close to the centre of town yet is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of inner-city life to have a relaxed atmosphere.

It's a waterside retreat with a bay on one side and the Yarra river on the other that bustles with weekend activity as families picnic, couples feed the seagulls from their delicious fish and chips from one of the many fantastic local eateries, and the young nurse hangovers with strong and delicious double-shot black coffees.

It's also a working port where fishermen, boat builders, furniture makers and artists work alongside each other in their pier-studios.

Williamstown is located on Gellibrand Point south of the mouth of the Yarra River with stunning views of the bay and the Melbourne skyline. On the other side of the bay from St Kilda, people come here to get away for the day and enjoy the cosmopolitan village atmosphere, fine foods, arts and crafts and marvellous markets.

Melbourne's first seaport was built at the mouth of the Yarra River in the 1830s and retains a fair bit of its working-class origins. Piers and jetties, shipyards, pubs, grand houses, more modest cottages and ships are all vital ingredients in the grand maritime narrative.

You can explore further afield from Gem Pier - regular ferry services connect with Southbank on the Yarra River and St Kilda on the other side of the bay.
