Hamilton is the self-styled wool capital of Victoria's pastoral Western District. It is a vast and beautiful region of green rolling hills, ancient river gums, extinct volcanoes and crater lakes.
Hamilton has matured from humble beginnings to become an attractive city. As the provincial centre for the Western District's farming community, it has all the facilities expected of a large town, but it seems to have grown carefully and with reverence to its heritage.
The Grangeburn River loops around the southern edge of town, neatly defining the commercial heart and a number of gracious public buildings and homes. Lake Hamilton exists due to damming of the river, where the earliest settlers once camped by the stream; lovely picnic grounds now provide an equally tranquil scene for today's visitors.
Close to Hamilton is Mt Eccles National Park, where 3 main craters of an extinct volcano form a scenic lake, and there are lava caves and tumuli to explore. Hamilton is a good base for the fascinating Volcanoes Discovery Trail, and is within two hours drive of The Grampians, Warrnambool, Mt Gambier and the Coonawarra wine district.Photos
