Observatory Point is where, in 1792, the two French Frigates, the L'esperance and the Recherche, sheltered from a storm, before going on to explore the region.
L'esperance gave its name to the area, so this spot has important historical significance.
The Esperance Bay Historical Society has placed a plaque on a rugged granite plinth at the top of the point, as a memorial to those early explorers, who no doubt enjoyed this breath taking view of the bay and islands as much as you will.
