Dirk Hartog Island was discovered by Captain Dirk Hartog in 1616, 152 years before Captain James Cook set out on his voyage of discovery to Australia. It is the largest island in Western Australia, and it forms the western boundary of the Shark Bay Marine Park.

Dirk Hartog Island is a very interesting area for the visitor with its many bays and unusual shoreline. The western cliffs are awe inspiring when lashed with heavy seas. Care must be taken by fishing parties as the sea here is dangerous even though the fishing is exciting. Fishing parties camp on the island but it is usual to seek permission from the station owners. Turtle Bay on the northern end of the island is well known for its deep sea fishing with Snapper, Groper and Cod the main fish. To the seaward side of the island is magnificent game fishing with Sailfish, Marlin and Samson fish caught.

A range of eco tours to the north and south botanical regions are available to to see the seasonal wildflowers and observe the many birds including the famous black and white wren.
