Western Australia’s dramatic Outback landscape appears unforgiving at first, but with a deeper look you’ll discover a region of incredible natural beauty. Covering most of inland WA, the region has a rich Indigenous history, vast open spaces, amazing salt lakes, gold rush mining heritage, sheep and cattle stations and roads that seem to extend forever. The area has the world’s largest open cut mine and will dazzle you with spectacular wildflower displays from July to September.
Located in the goldfields region, Kalgoorlie is the largest outback city in Australia with historic architecture that will blow your mind. Here you will also find the world’s largest open cut mine.
Heading to Coolgardie, you will find mulga vegetation and beautiful waterholes.
Definitely worth a visit is Wave rock – located in Hyden it stands at 14 metres high and is simply granite rock that has been eroded over many hundreds of years. It is exactly as it is named, a wave ready to crash down. It is one of Australia’s most famous landforms and is worth viewing at different times of the day to see the spectacular changes in colour as the daylight changes.
If you are a 4WD enthusiast, The Canning Stock Route is worth some exploration and will give you a huge challenge. Note though – this is one of the most isolated tracks on earth and travel on this desert track must not be undertaken unless you are fully prepared.
If you fancy a trip to a ghost town, Gwalia is a must. In 1963 the Sons of Gwalia Mine closed down and the town was literally abandoned over night. The town remains virtually untouched and will provide you with not only a chilling experience but one that is thrilling – to sift through heritage possessions.Photos
