The West Arthur Region sits between Western Australia’s Southwest and Wheatbelt and has a population of nine hundred eighty. Towns in the shire include Darkan, Arthur River and Duranillin.
Localities include Bokal, Bowelling, Boolading, Capercup, Cordering, East Arthur, Gibbs Crossing, Hillman, James Crossing, Kylie, McAlinden and Moodiarrup.
Darkan is its main town, which is situated roughly two hundred kilometres southeast of Perth and sixty kilometres east of Collie on the Roelands-Lake King Rd (also known as the Coalfields Hwy).
This small country town population approximately 250. Local industries include wool, sheep, timber, grain, forestry, beef, cattle hide tanning, engineering and earthmoving.
Darkan originally developed in the early 1900’s when the Collie to Narrogin railway line was built and soon became the administrative centre of the West Arthur Shire. The railway line was officially closed in the 1990’s but Darkan continues to grow steadily.
