Part of the Mundaring Shire, Chidlow was originally a railway town. Since the closure of the railway in 1965, it has become a haven of natural bushlands.
Only 45 kilometres from the city, Chidlow is close enough to spend a day out to enjoy bush walks and picnics or to simply relax and breath in the fresh air.
There is a picturesque picnic spot, Lake Leschenaultia, a man-made lake, originally constructed to provide water for steam trains and is located near Chidlow townsite. Owing to low density development and large areas of bushland there are many opportunities to view flora and fauna in their natural state.
The Railway Reserve Heritage Trail retraces the 70 kilometres of the old Eastern Railway which was constructed from Fremantle to York in the 1880's. Walking along the trail, you will discover the individual history and character of the small settlements that sprang up along the railway line.
This trail has become one of the major recreational facilities in the Mundaring shire , and is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding; it features the attractive scenery and flora and fauna of the Darling Range.
