Rockingham is a seaside resort suburb of Perth located on Mangles Bay. Rockingham is the site of the first permanent European settlement in Western Australia.
There is a nearby Naval Support Facility at Garden Island which was established in the 1970s. Despite being a commuter suburb of Perth it has a lovely cosmopolitan village atmosphere and retains a somewhat relaxed beachside character.
Rockingham's slogan is 'Your Aquatic Playground', and it certainly lives up to this claim. Go snorkeling, sailing, or surfing at the beautiful beaches, or try the jetties for fishing and crabbing. Rockingham has a number of beaches safe for children.
One great attraction is taking the ferry out to nearby Penguin Island to see the gorgeous fairy penguins close up; then visit the interpretive centre to gain an understanding of the diminutive birds.
Today Rockingham has ample shops for shopping enthusiasts, plenty of restaurants, cafes and pubs, and a selection of accommodation from resorts to caravan parks.
Points of interest include the Rockingham Museum, Rockingham-Jarrahdale Heritage Trail, Rockingham Market and Penguin Island Interpretive Centre, just a short ferry ride away. Seal Island, as the name suggests, is home to a colony of seals. Another great experience is scuba diving at Point Peron, an area which was featured in the 90’s TV series Ship to Shore.Photos
