Home to WA's first inland settlement, the region is steeped in history. Avon Valley is an easy day trip located to the north-west of Perth City.
The picturesque Avon River flows through the township of Northam, offering numerous wonderful picnic spots. Thanks to this beautiful river, the town of Northam gets very busy on the first weekend of every August, when hundreds of canoeists and power boaters start the 133km Avon Descent.
Just one and a half hours' drive north from Perth lies the important heritage site of New Norcia, founded by Dom Rosendo Salvado in 1846. After more than 150 years its ancient doors have been unlocked and visitors are welcomed to a world of olive groves, church bells and secret courtyards, home to 18 resident Benedictine Monks.
York offers unique insights into a rich and colourful past both before and following European settlement in 1831. By a quirk of history, developers have missed this picturesque hamlet and its magnificent heritage has been preserved.Photos
