Have a dip and enjoy the peace and quiet at 5 Mile Pool or further along the road at 3 Mile Pool, you can set up camp under the stars for the night or try your luck at mudcrabbing.
Near the mouth of the Ashburton discover the ruins of Old Onslow where historic buildings, including the gaol and courthouse can still be seen. For the fishermen amongst us, there is plenty of opportunity to catch a feed in Onslow. Throw in a line at the groyne or try 4 Mile Creek. If you have a boat, cruising the many creek systems is fun, or explore the many islands near Onslow.
Visit the Mackerel Islands, often described as a fishermans paradise. The 10 islands are located 23 km's off the coast. Thevenard Island, a 6km long coral atoll, boasts perfect white beaches, abundant fish, and spectacular coral for snorkelling. Onslow's most recent venture is construction of a solar salt field, constructed on tidal salt flats surrounding the town. The project will provide handling facilities to transport, process, store and load the salt into ships for export. The 1.3 km jetty, 3.5 km conveyor belt and stacker equipment provide spectacular viewing when lit up at night or join a tour from the Tourist Centre (subject to season and numbers so please check).
