Northcliffe is a self contained town often described as a well kept secret, about 366km's south of Perth, with a population of around 250 people.
The town is set on cross roads which lead to Windy Harbour Settlement on the south coast, Pemberton, Manjimup and beyond to the north, with Albany, Walpole, and Denmark in the south.
Tourism, beef cattle and dairy contribute to the town's economy. The dairy industry is said to be the cleanest and best producer of milk in the world. With the timber industry in decline, tourism is a fortunate savior.
The Bibbulmun Track passes directly through Northcliffe, making it an ideal place to begin section walks of the track. Local accommodation often delivers walkers to their chosen beginning place on the track.
There are five local walking trails, some passing through rare, old growth forests unique to this area. Northcliffe is reputed as the gateway to the D'Entrecasteaux National Park being the only sealed access point.
Evidence of Gondwanaland still remains in the Northcliffe district and rare species of fish can be found in some of the creeks. The enthusiast will discover hundreds of different wildflowers in the springtime, 75 percent of which are found nowhere else in the world except WA's south west.
Northcliffe boasts some of the clearest night skies in the south. Even during winter when wood fires cloud the air of many towns, Northcliffe remains clear. This is partly due to its close proximity to the coast and to the fact that Northcliffe is on a flat, not set amongst rolling hills which tend to trap smoke.
There are plenty of dining options available for visitors with hotel, restaurant, cafe and takeaway. The range of accommodation in Northcliffe includes; hotel, budget/backpackers, camping/caravan, bed and breakfast, farm stay, self contained and a boutique motel.
