Taumarunui is a picturesque town located at the convergence of the Whanganui and Ongarue rivers, and surrounded by Tongariro and Whanganui national parks and several forests.

In winter, Taumarunui functions as a ski town and in summer it is one of the access points for canoeing and kayaking on the Whanganui River.

Taumarunui offers a variety of accommodation from camping grounds to a modest motel.
