With the growth in the local wine industry, the service town of Masterton is beginning to attract more visitors looking for a weekend away, and is building a reputation as a family destination.
Sheep grazing and wool played a big part in Masterton's early economy, and the town is home to the annual Golden Shears Shearing Competition. Held in March, the competition attracts top shearers and many visitors to the town.
A favourite spot for local families and visitors is Queen Elizabeth Park. The gardens are filled with mature trees and shady corners for relaxation. There's a miniature train to ride on an island in the park lake, paddle boats to hire and the ducks are always happy to be fed.
The town also has a bird aviary, deer park, swimming pool complex, as well as many cafes, restaurants and accommodation of all sorts.Photos
