The harsh and hauntingly beautiful landscapes along the base of the Southern Alps in Canterbury will take your breath away. Edoras, the fortress city of the Rohan people, ( The Lord of the Rings) found its home among the wild, rocky tussock terrain on Mt Sunday, at Mt Potts Station. You can take refuge here too - enjoy some time out, soak in the views and replenish your batteries. Travel the inland roads from Christchurch or Ashburton through the Canterbury Plains, the largest area of flat land in New Zealand.

Dwarfed by the huge Southern Alps is Methven, a popular winter resort and gateway to nearby Mt Hutt ski field. Aside from skiing and snowboarding, the area is also a great base for fishing, jet-boating, hiking or mountain biking. Head further towards the alps and explore the vast riverbed of the Rangitata River valley – Mt Sunday can be seen from the unpaved road near the entrance to Mt Potts Station. And if you really want the best view of all, glide over the whole area in a hot air balloon. Magic!
