Methven rests at the foot of Mt Hutt, and this is where to come for an adventurous winter season or some relaxed summer activities. Methven is surrounded by seven ski areas and more than 1000 sq km of the best heli-skiing terrain in the country. Mt Hutt's ski season is stretched over five months (June-October), the longest ski season of any resort in NZ.

Although hot air ballooning, horse trekking, fishing and walking on the many trails around town are popular during summer, the small village comes alive during winter, when thousands flock here to make the most of the snow.

The town copes well with the influx of people. There are about 20 different cafes and restaurants serving everything from takeaways to gourmet meals.
