To the east lie the placid waters of the Tasman and Golden bays, and in the hinterland are the fruit and hops farms that are mainstays of NZ agriculture.

The jewel of the region is the Abel Tasman National Park, where you can kayak, walk or take a cruise among golden beaches and lush forest. For sheer diversity a visit to the Kahurangi National Park is unbeatable, offering coast-to-coast walking through terrain that is home to more than half of New Zealand's plant and mainland bird species.

The Motueka region is blessed with high-quality cuisine, locally produced wine and a full range of accommodation. New Zealand's entire hops crop (used for making beer) is grown in the Riwaka and Motueka River valleys. Seasonal workers in the fruit and hops harvesting season swell the population substantially each year.

As in nearby Nelson, Motueka has a thriving art and craft community, drawing inspiration from the dramatic landscape and beautiful flora and fauna. Many artists' studios are open to visitors, and the town's many eateries offer plenty of options for lunch and dinner.
