Located with the Caribbean Sea on the east coast and Pacific Ocean on the western coast, Nicaragua has huge biological significance and a unique ecosystem. The Central American Volcanic Arc runs through the heart of the country, the site of these spectacular mountains will take your breath away.
On the eastern side of the Island are the Caribbean Lowlands and here you will find a climate quite different to the rest of the island. There are tropical rainforests with Howler Monkeys and beautiful birds such as the Toucan and Turquoise-browed Motmot and it is home to Central America’s largest river Rio Coco. On the western side of the country are the Pacific Lowlands, which are mainly wide, hot, fertile plains. Defining these plains are some truly spectacular volcanoes . This area is home to the largest freshwater lake in Central America and also to some of the world’s only freshwater sharks.
The centre of the island is known as the North Central Highlands, this is a temperate land with a cooler climate than the Pacific Lowlands. It is less developed and consists of very fertile land, some of the best coffee and more traditional villages.
