Ipswich is situated at the head of Orwell estuary. The town boasts many historic buildings, the most famous being the Ancient House in the Buttermarket. It is famed for the Restoration plasterwork, which depicts the world, as they knew it at the time. There are only four continents, as Australasia had yet to be discovered.

Christchurch Mansion is also well worth a visit. Dating from 1548 and set in large Parkland it has the largest collection of Constable and Gainsborough paintings outside London.

Cardinal Wolsey was born in Ipswich in 1475. Wolseys Gateway stands in College Street, where he started to build a college in 1528. A year later King Henry VIII seized the college, destroyed it and relocated the materials to London, so that now only the gate remains.
