Fakenham

Fakenham is a market town, lying on the banks of the River Wensum. Indeed, it’s position probably inspired its name, as it is most likely a corruption of the phrase ’fair place by the river’.

Evidence of the first settlement here is dated about the 6th century, though the market was not established until 1250. In 1738 a widespread fire destroyed much of the town and as a result the town now boasts much Georgian architecture – particularly around the Upper Market area.

Whilst visiting Fakenham you should pay a visit to Binham Priory, which is a part ruined working church in a picturesque setting. Another amusement is the Thursford Collection, a slice of history with an exhibition of vintage organs and machinery.
