Lowestoft is Britain’s most easterly town and it marks the southern gateway to the Norfolk Broads network of waterways. Its prominent easterly position meant that is was greatly damaged in the Second World War, though some of the older parts of the town still remain.

Behind the inner harbour is a mass of cobbled lanes known as ‘the scores’, they are beautiful streets and well worth taking a walk down. Oulton Broad is a centre for racing all kinds of boats; yachts, dinghies and speedboats. They are all moored here and on the banks you can visit the hire shop and have a go yourself.

The town’s famous sons include the 16th century poet & dramatist, Thomas Nash and twentieth century composer Benjamin Britten, though he moved to nearby Aldeburgh in Suffolk and famously established a music festival there.
