The Barbican is Europe’s largest multi-arts and conference venue's which lies at the heart of the 35 acre residential Estate. The Barbican is recognisable across the city by its tower blocks, part of the dismally uniform grey concrete complex of flats, shops and offices of which it is comprised.
The site was once home to a watchtower, or barbican, but was levelled by the bombing of World War II. Designed to fill the space with its inspirational vision for future living, it had the misfortune of being built in an era that will not be remembered as the most glorious for British architecture.
You must visit the excellent Barbican Centre, the jewel at the heart of it all. The Royal Shakespeare company is actually based here as is the London Symphony Orchestra. There are also shows and film's screening often and there is the excellent Museum of London as well as the Barbican Art Gallery which has some wonderful exhibitions.
