Muswell Hill is on the northern migratory route out of the centre. When the Islington trendies unlace their trainers and feel the need to slip into something more comfortable this is where they come to do it.
Muswell Hill and Crouch End areas still keep a slightly alternative edge to them and the locals tend to be artier, media types more than stockbrokers and bankers. The Broadway is the main drag where there are good pubs and cafes, some nice places to eat and good delis. Small independent is favoured over the high street chain stores.
Alexandra Palace, 'the People's Palace', is an imposing building set in almost 200 acres of park with commanding views over London. It was first opened in 1873, burnt down almost immediately, was rebuilt and opened again just two years later in 1875. It now houses an ice rink and cafe in its tall, vaulted greenhouse style foyer and there is a boating lake, animal enclosure, conservation area and children's playground in the grounds. It is also a popular venue for music events and concerts.
