Tooting is a very multicultural area, with large Asian and Afro Caribbean populations; mean you are well served for Indian restaurants and exotic fruit in the local markets. Tooting Market has for many years been one of the ‘larders of south London’.
It is a covered market and is just off the High Street. It is full of food from all over the world, but definitely bias towards Caribbean food.
Tooting was served by the first electric tram system in London when it opened in 1903, and three years later Tooting Lido was opened. This is a fantastic spot for sunbathing when the British summer finally puts in an appearance, and can now lay claim to being the country’s largest open-air pool. Another nice spot in the summer is Tooting Common, which incidentally provided the turf for the Oval Cricket Ground.
