The Kings Road, like Soho's Carnaby Street, is synonymous with the fashion and pop culture of the Swingin' Sixties. It was in 1977 however that it crossed the line from fame to notoriety, when a certain Vivienne Westwood opened her shop "Sex" here and, together with her partner Malcolm McLaren, punk was born.
Art students and the bright young things have always flocked here to pick up the latest fashion accessories inspired by the mods and the punks. Unfortunately as time goes the small boutiques have been replaced by high street chains and interior stores, but you can still experience the old Kings Road at the enormous antiques market, and also at Chelsea Farmers Market, which has an large selection of stalls selling fresh produce and quaint craft stores crammed with the work of local artists.
Dotted all along the pavements are cafes pubs and bars, ideal for a well deserved shopping break or a lazy Saturday afternoon with the locals. The Picasso Caf is always full of artists and eccentrics, and has an impressive collection of Harley Davidson bikes parked out front courtesy of the neighbouring shop. Fantastic spot for people watching.
