Chigwell is an up-market residential area, and is known as the first village outside London. Although 11-miles from the capital, and accessible by the underground, the town centre still retains an olde world atmosphere.
The Kings Head is an old Tudor coaching inn, where you can find great home cooked food, it is here which inspired Charles Dickens ‘Maypole’ in his book Barnaby Rudge.
Nearby Stapleford Flying Club was an important Royal Airforce Base during the Battle of Britain and throughout World War II. Nowadays it provides a variety of aerial tours over Essex towns and London. For those with more high-flying ambitions, the club provides training for commercial and private licences.
