Not to be confused with the pretty nearby village of Welwyn, Welwyn Garden City is a new town laid out by the impressively named Ebeneezer Howard in the 1920s. The local shopping centre is named after him, although sadly they took his second rather than first name.
It is a well designed place with tree lined streets and a clean, modern centre, but being a new town it lacks the charm of the older neighbouring towns.
If your feeling energetic take a visit to Gosling Sports Centre, they offer excellent facilities including a dry ski slope, a great golf driving range, an athletics track, a gym and bowls.
Shredded Wheat is made here and it is often said to give the town a pleasant aroma.
