Just North of Oxford sits the beautiful small town of Woodstock. Originally a Royal Hunting Lodge, the town was founded by Henry II in 1164 . The royal connection has continued through to the present day, with Queen Elizabeth II making a recent visit as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Exhibiting a fine display of Georgian architecture, the main square is where you will find the Oxfordshire Museum housing an impressive display of local history, dating back to pre-Roman times.
Woodstock’s imperious neighbour is Blenheim Palace, a fantastic display of historic architecture. This wonderful site was gifted to John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, by Queen Anne and a grateful nation, as reward for defeating the French Army of Louis X1V in 1704. The surrounding Parkland and gardens are equally as beautiful and worth exploring.
