Banbury is an ancient market town set on the edge of the beautiful Cotswolds. The town is well known in England due to the fact it was in the popular nursey rhyme, 'Ride a Cock Horse'. It has been suggested that the lady in the nursery rhyme may have been Lady Godiva or Elizabeth I.
Many of the original timber framed buildings can still be seen around the market place, but Banbury owes most of its fame to its Cross, which is immortalised in the children’s nursery rhyme. To discover more about this and other matter of local history, visit the excellent museum that sits directly opposite.
Broughton Castle, this moated fortress was an important seat of intrigue during the English Civil War, and has both a gatehouse and church of particular historic beauty.
