The Midlands covers the great swathe of land that runs from the Severn Estuary in the south west to the Humber Estuary in the north east. Cheltenham, Cirencester, Warwick and Stratford-Upon-Avon lie towards the south of the region, while Birmingham, which has been subject to massive regeneration lately, dominates the industrialised central belt. To the north is the dramatic beauty of the Peak District, where you will also find extremely attractive spa towns like Matlock and Buxton.
In the West Midlands, Birmingham is a thriving city home to an international airport, the Bullring Shopping Centre and the nearby popular attraction of Drayton Manor Theme Park. Tamworth is to the north east of Birmingham and has a Snowdome boasting a 170m indoor slope while the theme park at Alton Towers is one of the best in Europe.
Stratford-Upon-Avon is the famous residence of William Shakespeare with some of the buildings and museum associated with him. To the south, Cheltenham is a spa town known for its boutique shopping, race course, Victorian style architecture and university. Nearby Gloucester and its Cathedral is also a popular tourist destination, with some of the scenes from Harry Potter filmed here. The areas of the gorgeous Cotswolds, Wye and Golden Valleys, Malvern Hills and Vale of Evesham are all within easy reach with its walking trails and rolling unspoilt countryside.
In the East Midlands, Rutland, the smallest county in England, has a beautiful lake with good walking, cycle tracks and other activities. Pretty market towns and rolling hills surround the area of Leicestershire including Market Harborough and Melton Mowbray famous for its pork pies. On the east coast the seaside resort of Skegness is a holiday town with its B&Bs, campsites, arcades and attractions such as the nature reserve and Seal Sanctuary.
Visit the rugged moorland, green hills and dales of the Peak District and the attractive town of Bakewell in the heart of the National Park. This is also Robin Hood country and Nottingham is a lively modern city with the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre near Mansfield.
Shropshire lies in the undulating countryside between Wales and Birmingham. The attractive county town of Shrewsbury has some of the best preserved Tudor architecture in Britain and charming Ludlow near the Welsh border has a medieval castle and good inns.Photos
