The unusual name of Ashby de la Zouch came from the Breton nobleman who inherited his estate in the 12th century. It has many fine Elizabethan timber houses, which line the wide high street, along with lovely georgian bow-fronted shops.
Ashby de la Zouch Castle was built in the 15th Century by Lord Hastings. The castle is an impressive medieval ruin that is dominated by its large tower.
Worth a visit is Snibston Discovery Park, where miners once spent long gruelling hours underground at the Snibston Colliery. It’s a great place for a family day out.
