To the south of this locality is Silverstone Race Track, which plays host to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. While the site is fundamentally well placed being in central England, near to both the M1 and M40 motorways, the roads that surround the circuit can get extremely congested at big meetings.

Nearby is Towcester, which claims to be one of the oldest towns in the country. The Saracen’s Head Inn featured in Charles Dickens’s Pickwick Papers and the 13th century Church has an interesting chained library.

Northampton was largely rebuilt after a widespread fire in 1675, meaning much of the architecture in evidence today is Georgian. The town was rebuilt around a huge Market Place and Daniel Defoe said of it, ‘the handsomest and best built town in all this part of England'.

By the 18th century Northampton had become a centre for leather and shoemaking, as tanneries sprang up along the banks of the River Nene. This aspect of the town’s history is recalled in the Central Museum and Art Gallery, which includes exhibits as diverse as Queen Victoria’s wedding shoes and a black, patent leather fetish shoe. To the north west of Northampton is Althorp House, childhood home and final resting place of Princess Diana.
