Robin Hood is legendary the world over, something we have Hollywood to thank for more than anything else. From Erol Flynn to Kevin Costner via Disney and Star Trek, the British underdog continues to fascinate us year in year out.
The archetypal goody-baddy, the noble outlaw, who robs from the rich to give to the poor, Robin is usually pitted against his arch enemy the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham, sometimes though to be modelled on Bad King John. From his hideout in Sherwood Forest he metes out justice, vigilante style, with his band of Merry Men including the portly Friart Tuck and titanic Little John.
But is there any truth behind the myth? Robin is first mentioned as far back as 1261, but stories about him only began to gather pace in the 17th and 18th centuries. Yet despite rigorous research, nothing more than fable has ever been collected and Robin must remain forever lost to us except in stories.
However, all is not lost for the avid seeker - Nottingham and the surrounding countryside are full of places associated with the intrepid bandit, while the Tales of Robin Hood attraction gives you a chance to live the myth yourself!
